TO BE
Steven Bouma-prediger, For the Beauty of the Earth.
… the most promising ecological ethic is one that asks not primarily, What do we need to do? but Who do we need to be?
Awareness
Calvin B. DeWitt, Earthwise: A Guide to Hopeful Creation Care.
In a time when so much calls for our attention … we might only barely notice the natural and environmental aspects of creation in our surroundings. We might take time to notice and learn things about creation only when we have a day off or when we take a vacation trip – and even then our impressions may be seriously obscured.
Two Books: Book of Scripture and Book of Nature
St. Augustine, Expositions on the Psalms (45:7)
There is for you the book of the divinely inspired page, so that you might hear these things; there is for you the book of the wide world, so that you might see these things. Only the literate can read the books, but even the illiterate can read the book of the world.
A Scientist Calling for Pastor’s Help!
E. O. Wilson, The Creation: An Appeal to Save Life on Earth
Pastor, we need your help. The Creation – living Nature – is in deep trouble. Scientists estimate that if habitat conversion and other destructive human activities continue at their present rates, half the species of plants and animals on Earth could be either gone or at least fates for early extinction by the end of the century.
The Decline of Insects
If you want birds, you need insects. If you want fruits and vegetables, you need insects. If you want healthy soils, you need insect. If you want diverse plant communities, you need insects. The rate of extinction among insects is eight times faster than that of mammals and birds, the analysis states, with the total mass of the world’s insects receding at a breakneck speed of 2.5 percent a year.
Oliver Milman, The Insect Crisis: The Fall of the Tiny Empires that Run the World.
Sacred Sound of Nature as Gift
Bernie Krause, The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places.
For me, listening with open ears enhanced a sense of extraordinary humility and imparted a sacred gift: a souvenir of living sound from a distinct place at a moment in time. Even now it brings me the greatest satisfaction I know.
Beauty of the Sharks
William McKeever, Emperors of the Deep: Sharks – The Ocean’s Most Mysterious, Most Misunderstood, and Most Important Guardians.
Because beauty takes shape when one recognizes the diversity of life and comprehends nature’s magnificent design, the experience of it touches the soul. Draped in various shapes and sizes lies a beauty to behold like pearls scattered throughout the world’s oceans. We just have to open our eyes to see the sharks as if for the first time.
